MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Behind a career-high hitting performance from sophomore Brianna Jones and her first double-double of the 2013 season, the Pfeiffer University women's volleyball team defeated Mount Olive 3-2. With the win the Lady Falcons improve to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas while Mount Olive falls to 6-9 and 3-2 in conference play. Jones finished the match with 16 kills which breaks her original career-high of 14 kills set on October 20, 2012 against Fayetteville State. The Lady Falcons were also playing their first match of the season without senior Milana Mervosh who was sitting out due to a knee injury suffered against King University.
After dropping the first two games to Mount Olive 24-26 and 19-25, the Lady Falcons came roaring out of the break with poise and determination. With game three tied at three points apiece, a kill by Jones sparked an 8-1 run by the Lady Falcons, and they never looked back. Jones served six straight Falcons' points and a monster block by senior Anna Vizvary and junior Kelly Lancellot clinched game three for Pfeiffer 25-18.
Game four was a bit closer than its predecessor, but in the end belonged to the Lady Falcons, 25-21. Game five was the highlight of the match, and couldn't have been much closer boasting seven ties and six total lead changes. Sophomore Emily Wall opened the frame for the Lady Falcons with three straight serves before a kill from Mount Olive's Dezirae Mackey tied the game at two apiece. Mount Olive attempted to make a stand and went up 11-8 off a service ace by Charnel Austin, but the Lady Falcons would be undeterred. Following a timeout by Pfeiffer coach Paul Lawson, the Lady Falcons began to mount their comeback. A kill by Vizvary put the Lady Falcons out in front for good, and Pfeiffer clinched the final game 18-16 off of a solo block by sophomore Kelsey Blauser. Blauser's block was the team's only solo block of the match and couldn't have come at a better time.
Sophomore Emily Wall led all players in the assist column with a whopping 41. Wall also scooped up 12 digs enroute to her first double-double of the season. The feat also marks the first time this season that two Lady Falcons have recorded double-doubles in the same match. Junior Nicole Mueller bested all Pfeiffer players in the dig column with 17 for the outing. This was also Pfeiffer's first five game match of the season and their first with five separate players putting up digs in double figures.
Pfeiffer has little time to rest as they travel to Wilson, N.C. tomorrow to take on conference foe Barton at 2 p.m.
