PLEASANT GARDEN, N.C. - Today at the Hagan Stone XC Classic, the Pfeiffer men’s cross country team finished as a top Division II school and one of the best NCAA teams overall.
Freshman Chris Laughlin led Pfeiffer for the second week in a row finishing 5th in Division II and 14th overall with a time of 27:42. Josh Wilhoit, Cody Jones, and Dillon Edwards finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, with times of 28:05, 28:20, and 28:24.
Nick Owens was fifth for Pfeiffer, and in tenth place overall with a time of 28:32. Henry Furman finished just four seconds behind in 11th place.
Brandon Garren was Pfeiffer's seventh scoring runner with a time of 29:38, followed by Nathan Jarman with a 30:35 and Cody Bivens with a 30:56. Jacob Thomas rounded out Pfeiffer's team in his first college cross country race with a time of 34:10.
"We had big expectations coming into this race, and the guys stepped up to meet them," commented Coach Nolt. "It was a great team effort".
The women also finished as the top NCAA Division II team. Cori Newton and Janna Featherstone were the top scoring Division II runners with times of 20:29 and 21:03. For both sophomores it was their best college performances to date.
Mary Steagall wasn't far behind with a time of 22:09 with Christie Baran and Trista Byers in 11th and 12th with times of 22:24 and 22:28. Kristen Hatley finished sixth for Pfeiffer with time of 23:51 and Alex Crouch was Pfeiffer’s seventh runner in her first race of the season after being sidelined with stress fractures in both legs.
Both teams will try to capitalize on this weekend success in six days at the Royals Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte. The women run at 5:00 p.m. and the men are at 5:45 p.m.
