MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Pfeiffer men’s and women’s golf teams competed in the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. The Lady Falcons finished in a tie for ninth-place, while the men placed sixth.
David Weinberger led the men’s squad, who finished only seven shots out of fourth place. Weinberger shot a two-round score of 146 for the Falcons who used a balanced attack to finish in the top third of the field. Four golfers finished inside the top-40 overall including Weinberger at 18th. One stroke behind him was A.T. Cashwell who shot a 71 and 76, good for 20th place. Tying for 39th overall were teammates Nathan Bull and Zach Weaver who each shot 150.
Wingate won the men’s side with a score of 574, three shots ahead of Mount Olive. Pfeiffer shot almost identical team scores in the two days, posting a 297 on the first afternoon and a 296 on day two.
Lauren Lyle paced the women’s team, shooting 157 over the two-day event. Lyle’s 75 on the first afternoon of the tournament was the best score for Pfeiffer, as she finished 17th overall. Narrowly behind her was sophomore Danielle Haizlip who shot a 158, good for 22nd place. Sarah Baldwin and Georgi Hoeksema rounded out the Lady Falcons top four with scores of 176 and 188 respectively.
Saint Leo won the women’s title, firing a 609, 11 shots better than the second place squad. The Lady Falcons shot a 659 on the par 72 course and had 11 birdies, led by four from Stefania Valgeirsdottir.
The golf teams are back in action on Monday, Oct. 14 but head to different tournaments. The men will compete in the State Farm Collegiate Invitational at Tazewell, TN, while the women stay local and compete in the Patsy Rendlemen Invitational in Salisbury.
