MISENHEIMER, NC – The sophomore duo of Brianna Jones and Kelsey Blauser combined for 29 kills as the Pfeiffer women’s volleyball team (6-14) outlasted Winston-Salem State 3-2 on Friday night. The team’s alternated the first four sets before the Lady Falcons won the decisive fifth set, 15-12.
Jones led the Lady Falcons with 16 kills, the sixth straight match she has paced the team, and finished with a .306 hitting percentage. Blauser smashed 13 kills and added four blocks.
Each of the first three sets produced 25-22 scored with Pfeiffer taking two of three. In the first set, Pfeiffer posted game highs in kills with 15, and hitting percentage at .258. Jones willed Pfeiffer to victory, with six kills in the first frame.
The second set went to the visiting Rams but Pfeiffer came back with a big win in the third stanza. Despite falling behind 7-3, the Lady Falcons would score 10 of the next 13 points to grab a 13-10 lead. The game would be tied eight more times before Winston-Salem pulled ahead 21-19. Pfeiffer would rally again, taking six of the last seven points and Megan Davis cemented the victory with a huge kill.
The fourth set went to the Rams by a score of 25-15, forcing the final frame. The Lady Falcons stormed out by scoring the first three points, and four of the first five. The Rams would cut the lead to two points on four separate occasions, before tying the game at 10. A hitting error gave the Lady Falcons a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Jones added a service ace and Blauser and senior Anna Vizvary combined for a block to push the lead to three. Kelly Lancellot ended the match with a monster kill on an assist from Emily Wall, her 24th of the match.
Lauren Carman dished out 19 assists in the match and three Lady Falcons posted double-digit kills led by 12 from Haley Denny. Lancellot and Vizvary each had two blocks and Jones finished with four aces.
The Lady Falcons return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Francis Marion for a 7 p.m. match.
