Hickory, N.C. - In the opening round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Women's Soccer Tournament, the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (13-7-1) was shut out by Belmont Abbey (15-3-3) by a 3-0 score Friday afternoon at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne.
Belmont Abbey's Maggie Moore finished with a goal and an assist as the Crusaders avenged a loss in penalty kicks to the Falcons last weekend in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship.
Moore opened the scoring in the seventh minute after heading the ball into the net off a corner kick by Jillian Lang, who was credited with the assist.
Moore assisted on the Crusaders' second goal at the 60:02 mark of the second half when she crossed the ball from the right into the box where Cassidy Coutinho finished off the play for the score.
The Crusaders' Laura Shelton rounded out the scoring in the 81st minute with an unassisted goal.
Belmont Abbey's Hannah Kohls earned the shutout victory in goal, her 10th of the season. Kohls stopped four shots on the day.
Pfeiffer's goalkeeper, Kate Halligan, took the loss despite tallying three saves.
Belmont Abbey also held a 16-10 in shots taken in advancing to the second round of the national tournament for the second consecutive year.
The loss concludes a tremendous season for the Falcons, whose 13 wins were the most since they won 14 in 2008. Prior to today's defeat, the Falcons had won five straight games and went 23 days without suffering a loss.
