MISENHEIMER, NC - The Pfeiffer men's volleyball team (2-3, 1-1 CC) overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Barton (2-6, 1-4) in five sets in the Falcons home opener. Pfeiffer trailed in the decisive fifth set by a score of 7-5 before rallying to score 10 of the final 15 points. Sonny Hirini's 17th and final kill sealed the victory as Hirini has finished with at least 12 kills in each of Pfeiffer's first five matches.
Pfeiffer hit .301 as a team compared to a .144 mark from Barton. Pfeiffer had a huge 61-38 advantage in kills, led by Hirini. Fabio Diniz had 12 kills and hit .429 for the match, while Michael Brewer had 13 kills and a .500 percentage.
Barton was led by Zach McCalla's 15 kills and Chad Stanback Jr. added 14 kills and six digs.
David Specian dished out a game-high 46 assists and added six digs. Kevin Ecklund had a game-high 11 digs.
Barton ran out to an early 1-0 advantage by taking the first set 25-21. The Falcons responded with a dominant 25-11 win in the second set and hit a blistering .524 as a team.
Barton would rebound to take the third set 25-15, before Pfeiffer grabbed a 25-16 win in the fourth frame, setting the stage for a fifth set.
After the Bulldogs ran their lead to 8-6, Pfeiffer would storm ahead by scoring six of the next seven points, capped by a huge kill from Brewer. Barton cut the lead to 12-10, but would get no closer the rest of the way. Brewer had five of Pfeiffer's 12 kills in the set.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow when they travel to Belmont Abbey for a 7:30 p.m. match. Pfeiffer beat the Crusaders 3-0 in both of last year's meetings.
