MISENHEIMER, N.C. – After their impressive road win at North Greenville, the Pfeiffer women’s basketball team (4-19, 3-12 CC) saw overtime flash before their eyes as the game-tying three pointer was a bit too strong against conference foe Barton (11-13, 8-8 CC) resulting in a 72-69 loss on Wednesday evening.
The Falcons were led offensively by Carter Williams who finished with 16 points and Lauren White who added another 15 points and nine rebounds. Alexis Stallard went on to contribute 13 points as the Falcons third scorer in double digits.
Pfeiffer and Barton traded basket-for-basket to open up the game as there were four lead changes and two ties in the first six minutes. With the game knotted at 13 apiece, the Bulldogs capitalized on a 16-5 run to take a commanding lead 29-18 with 7:30 left to play in the first half. A three pointer by Ariana Tillman helped spark the Falcon offense as they closed the half on an 18-11 run closing the gap to within four points at the half 40-36.
The second half seemed to be all Bulldogs as they jumped on the Falcons 11-4 to start the half led by Nyeshea Willie who tallied 14 of her 32 points in the second half. The Falcons continued to play hard as they chipped into the Bulldog lead for the remainder of the half. With the game going back-and-forth the Falcons found themselves in a good position for the dramatic finish.
With 1:10 left the Falcons were down seven until Stallard drained a clutch three pointer to cut the deficit to four. Pfeiffer proved that they could play trap defense as White forced a turnover that resulted in a wide-open Stallard layup on the other end to bring the Falcons to within two points. As the Bulldogs broke the press the Falcons had no choice but to foul, as Ashley Thornton went to the line where she converted on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
With no timeouts, Williams hoisted a three pointer that found the front of the iron which led to a scramble for the rebound. Heads up play by Tillman resulted in knocking the ball out of bounds off of the defender giving the Falcons one last look as they had the ball with six seconds left. With four seconds left, Vivian Doerr got a great look from the wing as she put up a three pointer that proved to be a bit too strong as the Bulldogs held on for the win.
The Bulldogs were paced offensively by Nyeshea Willie who had a game-high 32 points and six rebounds. Also chipping in for Barton was Brianna Thomas who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs capitalized on 21-of-27 from the charity stripe as the Falcons converted on 14-of 20 from the line. Pfeiffer also competed in a tough battle on the glass as they just barely got edged 51-45 for the game.
Pfeiffer will return to action Saturday, Feb. 22 as they travel to King. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
