UPSET MINDED WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO KING ON LATE THREE POINTER

BRISTOL, TN. – The Pfeiffer women’s basketball teams (4-20, 3-13 CC) trip to King ended in heartbreaking fashion as the upset disappeared on a game winning three, giving King (16-9, 10-7) the 56-54 edge over Pfeiffer. King’s Chelsea Bowling hit a three pointer from the corner with five seconds to go and Pfeiffer was unable to get a shot off on the other end.

Pfeiffer was led offensively by Carter Williams who had a game high 15 points on 5-of-14 from beyond the arc.  Lauren White also added seven points and seven rebounds with three blocked shots.

From the opening tip, it seemed as if the game would be all Pfeiffer.  Despite allowing the first basket, the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to take the lead, 10-5.  After trading a couple buckets, Brittney Washington buried a three pointer that sparked a 10-0 run over the next five minutes of the game as Pfeiffer took a commanding 22-10 lead with 7:06 left in the half.  King closed out the half on a 20-7 run of their own as Tia Keitt drained a three pointer to take the 30-29 lead going into halftime.

The Falcons did not let the run dampen their spirits as they came out strong in the second half.  The two teams traded basket-for-basket as Pfeiffer’s biggest lead in the second half came five minutes into the half as Carlisha Holivay made a jumper to capitalize on a 9-4 run to begin the half.

Over the next 12 minutes King went on a 16-7 run to take the lead 50-45 with 2:43 remaining in the game.  The Falcons were not done yet as Williams hit a three pointer on the Falcons next possession to cut into the deficit.

With 2:05 remaining, it was Alexis Stallard who provided the spark for Pfeiffer as she hit a three pointer to take the lead 51-50.

After Jalan Harper made a layup to give King the lead, she was fouled with 31 seconds remaining in the game where she went 1-of-2 from the stripe, setting up for yet another dramatic finish for the Falcons. Harper missed the second free throw but Bowling grabbed the offensive rebound and passed it back out to Harper where she was fouled yet again.  This time, Harper missed the front end of the one-and-one and it was Ariana Tillman who grabbed one of her team high eight rebounds.

With 13 ticks left on the clock, Williams stepped up in the clutch, knocking down her biggest three of the game to take the lead 54-53.  It was all but over for the Falcons, as King called a timeout with 10 seconds left.

As time expired, Bowling heaved up a three pointer with the Falcons watching in anticipation.  What seemed like an upset ended in heartbreak as the ball found the bottom of the net crushing Pfeiffer’s upset giving King the 56-54 victory.

King boasted two players in double figures as Harper finished with a team high 12 points and Keitt contributed with 11.  Bowling finished with only six points, but none bigger than her game winning three.

The two teams were evenly matched as King grabbed 49 rebounds to Pfeiffer’s 47.  Both teams contributed with 10 threes on the game.

Pfeiffer returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 25 as they host Converse.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
