HIGH POINT, NC – A pair of Falcons were named to the All-Conference Third Teams as announced by Conference Carolinas on Tuesday evening. Pfeiffer’s backcourt of sophomore AJ Clark and freshman Mike Smith earned the distinction as voted by conference coaching staffs late last week.
At the conclusion of the regular season, freshman guard Mike Smith ranked 19th in the nation with 21.5 points per game and was the only freshman to rank in the top 50. Smith scored in double figures in all but three contests this season and has scored more than 20 points in 16 games, including a stretch of 13 in a row from Nov. 10-Jan. 11. Smith recorded a career-high of 37 points against Mars Hill on Nov. 30 and led the Falcons in scoring in 20 games this year.
“Mike was ranked in the top five in the conference in seven different statistical categories and was ranked nationally in points per game, total points and steals,” said Head Coach Jeremy Currier. “The last player to score over 500 points in a season was our program’s last All American, Chris Woods. Mike is a talented scorer that had as strong of a freshmen campaign as anyone in the country and I am excited about him working to reach his potential this offseason.”
Clark started in all but one contest on the season and scored 16.5 points per game, good for 11th in the conference. Clark proved he was durable, logging 33.0 minutes per game which ranked him fifth in the league and his 108 assists also placed him fifth. Clark’s best performance came on Jan. 29 at Bluefield St. where he notched a career-high 32 points and 12 assists for his first career double-double.
“AJ showed a great deal of improvement from his freshman season,” Currier said. “The most obvious improvement was his growth as a leader on and off the court for our program. He is fully committed to developing his game, is always in the weight room working to get stronger, and has been a solid student in the classroom. I am excited to see where AJ will take his game heading into his junior season.”
Currier knows the future is bright for both young guards, as well as the Pfeiffer program that loses no one to graduation.
“I am proud of both AJ and Mike for being selected to the All-Conference team. They will be a strong backcourt together for the next two years.”
