MEN'S TENNIS WINS IN DRAMATIC FASHION OVER BARTON

Box Score

WILSON, N.C. – Pfeiffer men’s tennis (9-3, 2-2 CC) won in a nail biter today against Barton (8-4, 1-3 CC) by a final score of 5-4.

Pfeiffer came out of doubles play with the 2-1 lead as the team of Loic Minery and Sebastian Wernecke as well as Axel Woerner and Orlando Castillo defeated their opponents 8-6 in the number one and number three doubles position.  Stephen Miller and Bret Williams fell in the number two position by a score of 8-6.

Barton rallied to start singles competition, as they took 3-of-4 to take the 4-3 team lead.

Minery was the lone winner in the first four singles games as he defeated Rafael Ruiz by scores of 6-3, 6-2 in the number one singles slot.

The final two sets ended in dramatic fashion in favor of the Falcons.

Miller fought hard in the number five spot as he fell in the first set 4-6 but won the second set 6-3.  Down 4-3 in the third set and his back against the wall, Miller rallied for a ferocious comeback as he took the next three games to win the set by a score of 6-4 and to tie the match at 4-4.

The final set was the number four position as Jimmy Molina provided the clutch performance that the Falcons needed.  Molina fell in the first set 4-6 and won the second set 7-6 as he took the extra game by winning 7-5.  Much like Miller, Molina trailed in the third set 5-4 and rallied to take the next two games and the 6-5 lead.  However, he could not put Nick Genest away as he lost the next game to force the tiebreaker.  In the tiebreaker, Molina trailed 4-2 and rallied to win four straight points to take the lead 6-4.  With a couple of chances to earn the sixth point, Molina couldn’t put away Genest as he lost the next point, now winning 6-5.  Molina put that point behind him as he won the final point and the final set 7-6 (7-5) to secure the 5-4 victory for Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer returns to action Monday, March 24 when they host conference foe Limestone at 2:30 at Knapp Tennis Center.
