SUMTER, SC – The Pfeiffer women’s tennis team (19-1) overpowered Limestone (11-9) in the Conference Carolinas Semifinals with a dominant 5-0 victory. The win sets up a rematch with Erskine tomorrow in the Conference Championship as the Flying Fleet handed the Falcons their only loss of the season on March 31.
For the second consecutive day, Pfeiffer posted a 5-0 victory. The Falcons swept through doubles play unblemished and with little effort. In the number one spot, Taylor Lindsay and Valeria Mendoza came away with an 8-2 victory, while Olivia Nelms and Hannah Watson posted an 8-3 win in second doubles. The duo of Mylene Petitpas and Amanda Long defeated Limestone’s third doubles team 8-4 as Pfeiffer ran out to the early 3-0 advantage.
Petitpas dispatched Hannah Hopkins in fifth singles by a final score of 7-5 and 6-0. In sixth doubles, Briana Oliver beat Ariel Svantesson in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1 which clinched the victory and a trip to the finals.
With a win tomorrow, Pfeiffer would clinch a 20-win season and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. However, Erskine is the regular season champs and own a 17-5 record and are one of the top teams in the region. Erskine took the earlier matchup by a final score of 8-1 in Due West, SC but the Falcons will be hungry for revenge. The Championship match is set for 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
