|Gaffney, SC---The Pfeiffer men’s soccer team edged Conference Carolinas-rival #7 Limestone on Saturday afternoon, 4-3, in double overtime. The Falcons improve to 5-1 overall (1-0 conference) as the Saints slip to 3-1 (0-1 conference). |
Pfeiffer scored the first goal of the match as Limestone's goalkeeper was caught out of position. Matthew Harris took advantage to put Pfeiffer up 1-0 in the 13th minute as Lee Stafford got the assist. Saint midfielder Tom Beattie evened the score on a penalty kick five minutes later.
Pfeiffer took a brief 2-1 lead in the 19th minute as Wilver Menacho scored with Harris and Matthew Denton getting the assists. Limestone fought back as forward Andrew Sousa scored his first career goal off a pass from Liam Brown to equalize.
Limestone took the 3-2 lead with less than three minutes left to play. Stuart Wright served the ball from the near side to Adam Ennis who headed it past Pfeiffer's goalkeeper.
The Falcons equalized with 14 minutes left to play as Nick Brindley blasted a shot into the goal. No one scored in the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
The first overtime period was scoreless, but Pfeiffer clinched the game when Brindley scored his second goal just 39 seconds into the second overtime period. Mario Garcia picked up the assist.
Limestone had 13 shots to the visitor’s 9. Each team had seven corner kicks.
Saint goalkeeper Ryan Robinson and Falcon keeper Alex Moreno each had two saves.
Pfeiffer will next play Thursday when they host St. Andrews at 4:00 pm.
