Belmont Abbey midfielder Jim Ring broke a 9-9 tie by scoring with four seconds left in regulation, as the fourth-seeded Crusaders advanced to the semifinal round of the 2007 CVAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament with a 10-9 win over fifth-seeded Pfeiffer Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders improve to 6-8, while the Falcons end their season at 1-13.

The contest, which featured two ties, both in the last 5:27, saw neither team build a lead any higher than three goals. Ring opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the contest to give the Abbey a 1-0 lead. The Falcons momentarily tied the game at one at the 11:31 mark, but the goal was disallowed after it was scored with an illegal stick.

Undeterred, Pfeiffer tied the game at one with a goal at the 4:59 mark of the first quarter, but Homan and Fugitt answered with back to back goals to give the Abbey a 4-1 lead. Pfeiffer cut the lead in half with a goal at the 1:29 mark.

Both teams scored two goals each in the second and third periods to set up an exciting four quarter. Leading 8-6 at the end of the third, Pfeiffer fired home two straight goals to knot the contest at eight. A goal by Regan 42 seconds after the Falcons tied the game gave the Abbey the lead again, at 9-8, but Pfeiffer’s Chad Olsen took a feed from Eddie Gourley and fired home a shot to tie the game at nine to set up a wild finish.

After the tying goal, Ring won the face off to give the Abbey the possession. With 38 seconds left, Robinson fired off a shot that was blocked. Regan gathered the rebound, but turned it over to the Falcons, who then turned it back over to the Abbey.

Ring scooped up the loose ball and passed to Regan. With nine seconds left, Regan had his shot blocked, but the ball came to Ring, who tucked a shot just inside the crossbar. The ball caromed off the bar, but the official on the goal line ruled the ball crossed the line with four seconds left for the winning goal.
