|Mount Olive, NC---The Pfeiffer (10-8-3) women's soccer ended their season with a loss to Queens University (8-10-2) in the semi-finals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. The game was tied 1-1 after overtime but Queens won the penalty kick shootout, 7-6. |
Pfeiffer (10-7-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Megan Reaves’ corner kick caromed off a number of players in the box before Celia Walpole put the ball into the goal. The Falcons, playing with a 25-mile per hour wind at their backs, took a one-goal lead into halftime.
Queens (8-5-5) evened the match in the 65th minute as Jackie Groff played a ball from midfield to Tamara Diaz-Matosas in the top right of the box. Diaz-Matosas forced Pfeiffer goalkeeper Suzie Hinman off her line, then played the ball to Hayley Pasco, who scored in an open net.
Hinman kept Pfeiffer alive in the first overtime, fisting the ball over the crossbar on a 20-yard shot by Sami Striano.
The match remained tied as Queens went to a penalty kick shootout for the second consecutive match in the tournament. Both teams connected on their first six shots before Pfeiffer’s seventh attempt went over the crossbar. Segarra then put the ball in the back of the net to end the match.
“We practiced penalty kicks all week coming into the tournament. And having already gone through one shootout already helped prepare us today.” Queens head coach Katie Talbert.
“Both teams fought hard and played really well. The wind definitely made a huge difference in the game.” Pfeiffer head coach Sarah Denton.
