|Falcons Lose Two at Pembroke|

|Pembroke---UNCP defeated Pfeiffer twice, 8-7 and 5-4, in a doubleheader at LRA Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons (4-2) led by as many as five runs in game one and jumped out to an early lead in game two were unable to put UNCP away with the Braves scoring the game-winning runs in the sixth and seventh innings of both contests. |
Game one saw Pfeiffer score four runs with UNCP pitcher Martika Elmore getting the first start of her career. Elmore walked four batters giving up two hits in the opening frame putting herself into a difficult hole to dig out of.
UNCP would get on the board in the second inning when Candace Evans scored from second base on a throwing error by Pfeiffer. The Falcons would add two more runs in the top of the fourth on a Shelby Fleming two-run bomb over the leftfield wall to give Pfeiffer a 6-1 lead.
Hill hit a solo shot with two outs in the Braves’ of the fourth to pull UNCP within four of the Falcons. The Braves would then tack on five runs in the bottom of the fifth (two on an Anna Williamson single, two on Bartz’s home run to center and one on a throwing error by Pfeiffer) to take a 7-6 lead into the sixth inning.
Pfeiffer would be quick to respond in their half of the sixth loading the bases and scoring a run on a wild pitch to tie the game at 7-7. Elmore was able to strike out the remaining batters to get out of the jam to keep the game tied with the Braves coming up to bat.
Katie Linkous started the sixth with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Carissa Dancer. Dancer advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christy Freeland and eventually reach home on another Pfeiffer throwing error.
Elmore would walk the first batter of the inning for Pfeiffer but would sit down the next three as the Fayetteville, N.C. native earned her first collegiate victory, giving up seven runs (all earned) on four hits while striking out 11 and walking 11. Dacia Ijames was credited with the lost for the Falcons in six innings of work.
In game two Pfeiffer once again broke the scoreless tie, this time with a two-run second inning. Hill got the Braves on the board in the bottom half of inning two with her second solo shot of the day to cut the Falcons lead in half.
Pfeiffer went up 3-1 in the fourth on a Martina Bullard single to center which scored Amanda Braswell from second. UNCP tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on a pair of singles by Bartz and third baseman Jelena Shaw before the Falcons regained the lead in the top of the sixth Pfeiffer’s Hannah Clark recorded a single of her own to score Sarah Moore from third.
In the bottom of the seventh Brittany Berrier led off the inning with a one-bagger up the middle. Berrier stole second to get into scoring position and would later score on a throwing error by Pfeiffer’s third baseman.
Patrick’s first run batted in, a single down the leftfield line, scored the winning run for the Braves who improved to 5-3 on the season with the win.
Amanda Braswell went six-and-two-thirds for the Falcons and was credited wit the loss for Pfeiffer.
Pfeiffer travels to Brevard College on Sunday for a double-header starting at 1:00 pm.
