RESULTS VS. UNC - CHAPEL HILL (2006-11-11 17:00:00)

Falcons Battle Tarheels
Saturday, 11 November 2006

100_0465 Chapel Hill - DeMario Grier led all scorers with 29 points but it wasn't enough as Pfeiffer fell to the University of North Carolina by a score of 140-101 in an exhibition basketball game Saturday before a sellout crowd of 21,750 at the Smith Center.

DeMario Grier led all scorers with 29 points, all of which came in the second half. Grier was 0 for 6 from the floor in the first half, including 0 for 3 from three-point range. However, in the second half, Grier made 7 of 12 from beyond the arc and 10 of 16 field goals overall.

The Falcons led 9-8 before the Tar Heels went on a 19-0 run, sparked by eight points from Hansbrough and four from Wright. Carolina shot 59.5 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and built a 70-35 lead at the half.

UNC extended the lead to as many as 55 points in the second half at 125-70 with 4:26 to play. The Falcons out-scored the Tar Heels 28-15, in the final 3:55 as the teams combined to score 136 points in the second half (70-66, Carolina). The Tar Heels shot 64.4 percent and the Falcons made 52.2 percent from the floor over the latter 20 minutes.

Derek Moore (18 points), Thomas Carr (12) and Logan Call (10) joined Grier in double figures for Pfeiffer.

Hansbrough, who was 10 for 13 from the floor, was one of eight Tar Heels to score in double figures. Wayne Ellington (19), Danny Green (16), Ty Lawson (15), Brandan Wright (12), Deon Thompson (11), Alex Stepheson (10) and Marcus Ginyard (10) also scored in double figures for Carolina.

Coach Roy Williams on Pfeiffer, "I said it earlier- you have to enjoy watching their competitiveness, how they kept playing. It wasn't just us. They played hard match-ups. Tyler's having to guard a guy 25-feet from the basket and there's no post player so it's a little unusual to what we're going to play, but I liked their club. They competed for 40 minutes, and we competed for about 30.

"First and foremost the the folks at Carolina are first class. We were treated incredibly well by everyone. I was incredibly proud of our guys for their competitiveness through a great deal of adversity. We lost our point guard Robert McGriff to an eye injury early in the game. We had four guys in serious foul trouble in the first half and we had 20,000 folks in the building that were not on our side. It was just an incredible experience and our players played so hard against a much, much, much bigger team. Coach Williams does an incredible job with such a talented team, getting them to play so unselfishly! We executed as well as we ever have offensively but had a difficult time stopping them and just got massacred on the backboards! Logan Call was very good tonight and took it right at their big posts. Thomas Carr had an excellent game in every facet. He was 4-7 from three but did so much more. Derek Moore stepped up and had a big game and Robert was a warrior playing most of the game with an eye that made it almost impossible to see! DeMario Grier had a phenomenal comeback in the first half and gave us a great spark! Foul trouble and the injury made it impossible to play defensively the way we wanted to. We only pressed full court a handful of possessions and we had lineups on the floor constantly that had never played together. we regrouped at halftime and played much better. We scored 66 points on North Carolina in a half, I am not sure many teams have done that!"

Pfeiffer opens their regular season when they host Allen University Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
