FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Pfeiffer baseball team (13-7) handed Methodist (20-3) just its third loss of the season with a 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon, salvaging the final game of the three-game weekend series. Will Altemueller tossed six solid innings and Xavier Rodriguez retired all six batters he faced to earn the save.
The Falcons jumped ahead early, tacking on four runs in the top of the second inning. Kyler Fairchild and Rodriguez produced RBI singles to put a pair of runs on the board before Jordan Eckard scored two with a single through the left side.
In the top of the third, Christian Marciano launched his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left that gave the Falcons a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Methodist would add single runs in the third and fifth innings but the Falcons would push across a huge insurance run in the top of the eighth. A throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff throw allowed Kirby Lambert to cross home with Pfeiffer's sixth run of the game.
The Monarchs wouldn't go away easily as the first five batters reached safely in the bottom of the eighth before the Falcons went to Rodriguez. The lefty entered with runners on first and third with no outs and Pfeiffer clinging to a 6-4 advantage. The first batter was retired on a fielder's choice with the out being recorded at home but Matthias Carter would groundout to second and score a run. Ahead 6-5 with the tying run on third, Rodriguez reached back and struck out David Cass to end the threat.
Rodriguez would send down the side in order in the ninth for his third save of the season.
Starting pitcher Altemuller went six innings and allowed six hits and two runs while striking out four batters.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday when they host Queens at 6 p.m. It will be Pfeiffer's first home game since March 4.
