William Peace Deals Pfeiffer Men's Basketball a 118-113 Defeat

Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 2, 2019) –
The Pfeiffer men's basketball team could not overcome an early 13-point deficit and fell to visiting William Peace University in Merner Gym on Wednesday afternoon.

The visiting Pacers sprinted out to a 20-7 lead over the first seven minutes.  Pfeiffer did make a comeback and took the 28-26 lead at the 7:26 mark of the first half.  The Falcons would lead by as many as six points (41-35) but WPU trimmed the Falcon lead to 44-43 with a tip-in at the first half buzzer.

In the second half, WPU enjoyed their largest lead of the game at the 11:53 mark when Camden Ferguson drilled a three-pointer to stake the Pacers to the 79-63 lead.

Pfeiffer did battle back, trimming the deficit to as little as three points (104-101) with 1:59 to play following two free throws from senior Kyle Riddley (Charlotte, N.C.).  Pfeiffer would get no closer the rest of the way, as WPU claimed the 118-113 USA South win.

Riddley led all scorers with 38 points while teammate Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) managed 18 points in the loss.  Blake Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) had a good outing for the Falcons, going for 12 points while shooting 4-of-6 from long range.

William Peace had five players score in double figures, led by Mikal Gaylord's 24 points.  Gaylord also dished 12 assists for the double-double.  Ferguson also had a good afternoon, scoring 19 points while hitting five three pointers.

Collectively, both teams shot well from long range, with Pfeiffer hitting 20 from distance and WPU making 17 three-pointers.

The loss drops the Falcons to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in USA South play while WPU improves to 6-5 and 3-1 in league play.  Pfeiffer will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, hosting Covenant College in a USA South matchup at 2:00 p.m. in Merner Gym.
