William Peace Deals Pfeiffer Men's Basketball a 118-113 Defeat
Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 2, 2019) – The Pfeiffer men's basketball team could not overcome an early 13-point deficit and fell to visiting William Peace University in Merner Gym on Wednesday afternoon.
The visiting Pacers sprinted out to a 20-7 lead over the first seven minutes. Pfeiffer did make a comeback and took the 28-26 lead at the 7:26 mark of the first half. The Falcons would lead by as many as six points (41-35) but WPU trimmed the Falcon lead to 44-43 with a tip-in at the first half buzzer.
In the second half, WPU enjoyed their largest lead of the game at the 11:53 mark when Camden Ferguson drilled a three-pointer to stake the Pacers to the 79-63 lead.
Pfeiffer did battle back, trimming the deficit to as little as three points (104-101) with 1:59 to play following two free throws from senior Kyle Riddley (Charlotte, N.C.). Pfeiffer would get no closer the rest of the way, as WPU claimed the 118-113 USA South win.
Riddley led all scorers with 38 points while teammate Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) managed 18 points in the loss. Blake Smith (Wilmington, N.C.) had a good outing for the Falcons, going for 12 points while shooting 4-of-6 from long range.
William Peace had five players score in double figures, led by Mikal Gaylord's 24 points. Gaylord also dished 12 assists for the double-double. Ferguson also had a good afternoon, scoring 19 points while hitting five three pointers.
Collectively, both teams shot well from long range, with Pfeiffer hitting 20 from distance and WPU making 17 three-pointers.
The loss drops the Falcons to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in USA South play while WPU improves to 6-5 and 3-1 in league play. Pfeiffer will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, hosting Covenant College in a USA South matchup at 2:00 p.m. in Merner Gym.
