North Carolina Wesleyan Trips Pfeiffer in Overtime 128-123

Rocky Mount, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2019) –
North Carolina Wesleyan outscored the Pfeiffer University men's basketball 15-10 in overtime to take a 128-123 USA South win on Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mount, N.C.

The Falcons and Bishops battled close throughout the afternoon, with neither team able to build a substantial lead.  Pfeiffer did grab their biggest lead of the game early in the second half following a Kyle Riddley (Charlotte, N.C.) three-pointer that made it 69-64.

N.C. Wesleyan fought back, erasing the cushion, but Pfeiffer built it back to five points (84-79) after Tyjarek Simmons (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) drilled a three-pointer with 11:29 to play.

After the Bishops jumped ahead 93-90, Tristen Rodriguez responded with a three, tying the game at 93-93, the 15th of the game.

With N.C. Wesleyan leading by three (102-99) with 4:52 remaining, Pfeiffer tied it again, this time after Riddley dropped a layup while being fouled.  He made the subsequent free throw to knot the game once more at 102-102.

After a pair of Simmons free throws put the Falcons up 109-106 at the 2:05 mark, N.C. Wesleyan got a basket from Ricardo Bullock pulling to 109-108.  Pfeiffer's Josiah Avington (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored to put Pfeiffer back up three (111-108) with 1:01 left, but the Bishops would tie the game for the 19th time, this time thanks to a Chris Braswell long ball that made it 111-111.  N.C. Wesleyan then went up 113-111 with 10 seconds to go, but Simmons was able to force overtime with a layup with two seconds left.

With Pfeiffer leading 119-118 in overtime, N.C. Wesleyan reeled off five straight points to take the 123-119 lead with 1:58 to play.  Pfeiffer's Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) did  trim the lead to 123-121 but that would be the closest the Falcons would get, as the Bishops closed the game out with a Josh Covington layup and free throw, taking the 128-123 win.

Five Falcons achieved double-digit scoring outputs on the afternoon, led by Simmons' 35 points.  Avington managed 25 points while Riddley and Sabb each contributed 23 and 22 points, respectively.  Nolan Whitener (Vale, N.C.) also chipped in 10 points in the loss, which drops the Falcons to 8-8 and 3-6 in USA South play.

N.C. Wesleyan got a team-best 28 points from Robert Wilson and improved to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in league play.
