Falcons Outlast N.C. Wesleyan 139-131 in Wild Double-OT Game
Misenheimer, N.C.– The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team used a 23-point outburst in the second overtime period to take a wild 139-131 win over division-leading North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Merner Gym.
The game, which lasted nearly two-and-one-half hours saw the teams combine for 33 three-pointers and nine players score in double-figures.
Pfeiffer senior Kyle Riddley (Charlotte, N.C.) had one of his best games of the season, going for 40 point and posting 11 rebounds. Riddley, the ECAC South Player of the Month for January, continued his torrid pace, hit 14-of-25 shots from the field. He also hit two three-pointers and was 10-of-14 from the free throw line.
Tied at 116-116 after the first extra period, the Falcons pushed the issue inside and was the benefactor of several fouls by the Bishops. In all, Pfeiffer hit 18-of-20 shots from the line in the waning stages of the game, which included an 8-of-8 mark from guard
Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.). Sabb finished 11-of-12 from the line on the night and contributed 27 points.
Josiah Avington (Fredericksburg, Va.) also had a great night, hitting six three-pointers and finishing 8-of-18 from the field to also net 27 points.
Senior Nolan Whitener (Vale, N.C.), who was honored prior to the game alongside Riddley, playing in his final home game, also posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, which included five offensive boards.
Freshman Blake Zieske (Belmont, N.C.) was the other Falcon to post double figures, finished with 16 points in the win.
Also playing in his final home game for the Black and Yellow, senior Evan Fosha (Ypsilanti, Mich.) managed three points and three rebounds.
The win snaps a three-game skid for the Falcons, improving their record to 11-12 overall and 6-10 in USA South play while North Carolina Wesleyan drops to 18-5 overall and 11-4 in league play.
Pfeiffer will take to the road in their final two games, traveling to Greensboro College on Feb. 13 for a 7:30 p.m. game with the Pride. Pfeiffer will close the season on Saturday, Feb. 16 with a 3:00 p.m. road game at Johnson.
