MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Derek Thomas and Blade Garlow combined to score nine goals as the Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (7-5) defeated local rival Catawba (4-8) by a final score of 14-8 on Wednesday night. Playing in their final non-conference game of the season, Pfeiffer avenged last year's loss at Catawba with the easy victory.
Mike Moorehead was tremendous in goal for the Falcons as the sophomore made 18 saves on 26 shots. The Falcons held a 39-38 advantage in shots, including a 25-9 margin in the first half.
Catawba's Connor Eakes won 18-of-22 faceoffs and grabbed 13 ground balls in the losing effort. Dalton Cook and Connor Kennedy each scored twice for the Indians.
Garlow scored four of his five goals in the first half and Thomas notched two tallies as Pfeiffer went into the halftime break with a commanding 8-1 advantage.
After Catawba cut the lead to 8-2 in the third quarter, Matt Michaeli and Thomas pushed the lead to 10-2, Pfeiffer's largest of the contest. The third quarter would end with the Falcons ahead 11-4.
Catawba scored the first two goals in the fourth quarter but Michaeli answered. After Cole Sheen notched his 30th goal of the season and Thomas completed the four-goal evening, Pfeiffer was well on its way to sealing the victory.
Michaeli also finished with a hat trick on the night and Ryan Cummings had two assists. Garlow led the Falcons with six ground balls and Michaeli added five. Jake Bye was a force on the defensive end, causing four turnovers and scooping up give ground balls. Kenny Robertson caused five turnovers for Pfeiffer as the Indians gave the ball away 25 times.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host North Greenville at 2:30 p.m.
