MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Playing against the preseason favorite to win the West Division of the USA South, the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (0-3) battled but came up just short in a 2-1 loss at Maryville (3-0) on Saturday afternoon. The loss gives Pfeiffer its first three match losing streak to start a season since 2012.

Pfeiffer couldn't have gotten off to a worse start in this one. After allowing the opening score 4:16 into the match, Pfeiffer saw the deficit swell to 2-0 on an own goal just 3:42 later. Instead of giving in, the Falcons clawed back into the game and gave the defending USA South Tournament Champions all they could handle.

After the halftime break, sophomore Xavier Lamour cut the lead in half with the first goal of his career with the assist going to Chris Brown. Brown sent his free kick into the box and Lamour headed it home. Pfeiffer continued to pressure the Scots and had a corner kick with 50 seconds remaining. However, the Maryville defense cleared the ball as the clock expired on Pfeiffer's comeback attempt.

The Falcons held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon and Maryville held a 9-7 lead in shots. Tomas Correa made three saves but dropped to 0-2 in goal on the season. The Scots' Ryan Jorgensen went to 3-0 by making three stops.

The physical match featured 27 foul calls and six yellow cards handed out. Brown led the Falcons with two shots and five different players registered one shot.

Jameson Elmore was the goal-scorer for Maryville.

The Falcons have an extended break and will return to action on Monday, September 18 when they travel to Guilford for a 7 p.m. match.
