DANVILLE, VA. -- The Pfeiffer men's soccer team (6-6-1) scored twice in the first 9:20 en route to a 2-1 victory at Averett (4-9-2) on Wednesday evening. Jamie Henriquez scored first and Chris Brown netted the game-winner as Pfeiffer improves to 5-2-1 over their past eight matches.
Pfeiffer held a 20-13 advantage in shots on the evening and an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. Tomas Correa earned his sixth win of the year in goal as the senior made three saves.
Henriquez scored in the seventh minute for his first career goal. The unassisted strike came as his shot pinged off the crossbar and in to give the visitng Falcons an early lead. Just 3:18 later, Brown scored his sixth goal of his sophomore campaign on an unassisted goal.
The opening half would end with Pfeiffer maintaining a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
Despite the lead, the Falcons didn't let up in half number two. Pfeiffer recorded 12 of its 20 shots on the evening in the final 45 minutes but couldn't find the back of the net. Marius Olavesen made six saves for the Cougars, including five in the second half, to keep Averett in the game. The Cougars would pull within one goal in the 57th minute as Tobias Andreasson finished a through ball to the near post. However, the Pfeiffer backline would not allow the Cougars to find the equalizer to earn the program's sixth win of the year.
Pfeiffer held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks in this battle of USA South foes. Brown and Henriquez each registered four shots in the battle.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Berea on N.E. Lefko Field at 2 p.m. On Sunday, Pfeiffer will host Senior Day prior to their 1 p.m. match against Huntingdon before hitting the road for the final two matches of the season.
