MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- In the final home game of the regular season, the Pfeiffer men's tennis team (12-4) dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Averett (13-5) on Tuesday afternoon at the Knapp Tennis Center.
The Falcons dropped 2-out-of-3 in doubles action and faced an early deficit. Bjorn Barwinski and David Weir took an 8-6 victory in first doubles but the Cougars would answer with wins in second (8-6) and third (8-5) doubles.
Thomas Hubble grabbed a win in straight sets in first singles, topping Nicolas Yanes by scores of 6-4 and 6-0. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Barwinski had to retire in the second position. An Averett win in third singles gave Averett a 4-2 lead but Raul Ruiz and Eduan Louw won in fifth and fourth singles respectively to even the match. A three-set battle in sixth singles between Thomas Woodcock and Ethan Elliott went Averett's way with scores of 6-2, 3-6 and 6-4.
Pfeiffer will wrap up the 2017-18 regular season on Sunday when they travel to Randolph for a 1 p.m. match.
