CHAMPS: Men's Tennis Claims First ECAC Championship in School History

OWINGS MILL, MD. – The Pfeiffer men's tennis team (14-4) entered the ECAC Division III Men's Tennis Tournament as the No. 1 seed and had little trouble eliminating FDU-Florham and Stevenson by scores of 4-0 to earn the program's and universities first ECAC Championship.

In the semifinal, Pfeiffer dispatched the No. 4 seed Devils (15-6). With doubles counting as one point, Pfeiffer was able to grab wins at the number 2 and 3 spots to earn the 1-0 advantage. Thomas Hubble and Raul Ruiz won at number 2 by a score of 6-1 and Eduan Louw and Trey Speight won at number 3 6-2.

In singles play, Bjorn Barwinski won at number 1 by scores of 6-0, 6-0 and Weir earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at number 3. The clincher came at the number five spot as Ruiz won 6-1, 6-0 to finish the match in dominating fashion.

Stevenson (14-7) had to defeat Washington & Lee at 1 p.m. to earn a spot in the 5 p.m. championship match against the Falcons. However, they put up little fight as the Falcons cruised to the title.

Once again, Pfeiffer grabbed the doubles point with wins at number one and two. Barwinski and Weir earned a 6-1 victory and Hubble/Ruiz won 6-3.

In singles action, Louw earned an easy 6-0, 6-0 win and Ruiz's won at number five, 6-1, 6-0. Louw's win at number three singles clinched the victory and the title.

This was the first year Pfeiffer was a member of the ECAC and the Championship was the first won by the University.
