MISENHEIMER, NC – The Pfeiffer Falcons (2-0) took both games of their doubleheader against the Queens Royals (1-7) on Saturday at Jack Ingram Field by the scores of 4-2 and 5-3 (F/10). Game two's hero, freshman Makenzie Pennell hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth to secure the sweep.
In game two, Pfeiffer had eight hits through eight innings but were unable to break through on the scoreboard. Caitlin Christian held Queens to one hit through seven innings and tried to hold strong in the top of ninth. Breanna Martinez was placed on second base and then two batters later, Sydney Ditto laid down a bunt single to score Martinez from third. After Christian was able to get the Royals Sabrina Martinez on the sacrifice bunt, Abby Lathan laid down another bunt that Pennell wasn't able to handle cleanly as it scored Ditto.
Pfeiffer answered in the bottom of the the inning as Pennell reached on a single up the middle and moved over the runner Sydney Poole to third. Chandler Walker hit a RBI single to right to score Poole from third. Queen's pitcher Courtney Pearson was able to get the next two batters but then Emma Tuttle singled to left center to score the freshman third baseman and tie the score at two.
The Royals added another run in the top of ninth as Brooke Sanford singled in Hanna Hasker for the go ahead 3-2 lead.
In the top of the 10th, after Vada Blue Sherrill was placed on second base to start the half inning, Stephanie Fortner singled up the middle to tie the score once again. Pearson retired the next two batters on a ground ball double play, but was unable to get Pennell who brought in the go ahead runs with the homerun that carried over the left field fence.
Falcons starter, Christian picked up her first win of her career as she went ten innings allowing two runs on three hits and while striking out seven.
In game one, Pfeiffer scored early when Sherrill walked and stole second base, Rachel Crowder singled to left and advanced Sherrill third. Pfeiffer first baseman Kiana Millsaps sacrifice to left scored Sherrill for the first run of the game. The next batter, Pennell singled up the middle to score Crowder for the 2-0 lead.
Queens cut the score to 3-2 as Hanna Hasker scored on an error by the right fielder and Elaina Frantelizzi walked with the bases loaded.
The Falcons scored one more in the top of the sixth as Kaleigh Troutman reached on a throwing error by the Hasker, Peck reached on a fielding error by the shortstop Martinez and then Tuttle singled to right to score Troutman from second base.
The Falcons went on to win game one as Tuttle had two hits with an RBI and Sherrill had two hits with an RBI and three stolen bases.
Pfeiffer returns to action at home as they host Glenville State on Sunday 12 p.m.
