Offense Explodes in Pfeiffer Softball Sweep of Livingstone

Misenheimer, N.C. (Feb. 18, 2019)
The Pfeiffer University softball team plated 43 runs and had 37 total hits, 14 of which were for extra bases as the Falcons overwhelmed visiting Livingstone, winning 20-0 and 23-0 in a doubleheader at Jack Ingram Field on Monday afternoon.

Game one saw the Falcons push 12 runs across in the first inning.  In that frame, senior Vada Blue Sherrill (Hiddenite, N.C.) started things off with a sharp single through the left side. She then stole second and third on the next two pitches and would later score when Makenzie Pennell (Taylorsville, N.C.) used a sacrifice fly to plate Sherrill.

With Pfeiffer up 3-0, freshman Caiti Mickles (Boonville, N.C.) laced a two-RBI single to make it 5-0.

After the 12 runs scored in the first, the Falcons sat Livingstone down in order and would go on to score in the second inning on an Alyssa Heitz (Concord, N.C.) two-RBI double followed by an RBI single from Kayla Miller (Shallotte, N.C.).

Pfeiffer would go on to add four in the third and one in the fourth to go up 20-0.

Four different Falcon pitchers combined to no-hit the Blue Bears in the game, with Caiti Mickles getting the start, striking out one in one inning pitched.  Reece Davis (Hickory, N.C.) had a productive outing in game one, striking out four of the six Livingstone batters she faced and earned the win. Kyndle Wallace (Sanford, N.C.) and Emerson Puzey (Chesapeake, Va.) each struck out one while pitching one inning each for the Falcons

In game two, Pfeiffer used the long-ball to race past the Blue Bears.  The Falcons jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning after a Sarah Brown (Franklin County, Va.) two-run blast that cleared the fence in left center.

In the third inning, Pennell used her first homer of the season to go ahead 4-0 following a Paige Love (Rock Hill, S.C.) walk. An RBI single from Hannah Tyner (Carthage, N.C.) provided the 5-0 lead for Pfeiffer at the end of the third inning.

In the fourth inning, the Falcons exploded, as Pennell, Kiana Millsaps (Taylorsville, N.C.), and Sherrill all launched home runs.  Sherrill had two in the inning, with the second being an inside-the-park grand slam after her shot to center field burned the Livingstone outfielder and she raced around the bases for her third of the season.

All told, Pfeiffer had 14 hits in the inning which included six singles, three doubles, one triple, and four home runs.

Sherrill had six RBI on a 3-for-5 effort at the plate while Pennell drove in four, also going 3-for-5.

Defensively, Davis earned the pitching win for Pfeiffer, throwing three innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits while improving to 2-0.

The wins improve Pfeiffer to 4-0 on the season.  The Falcons return to play this upcoming weekend at the Triangle Classic in Raleigh.  Pfeiffer will take on the Mississippi University for Women at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 23 and Olivet at Noon.  On Feb. 24, Pfeiffer will take on Emory University at Noon and Christopher Newport at 2:00 p.m.
