Falcons and Pacers Split Extra Inning Doubleheader
Raleigh, N.C. (April 10, 2019) –The Pfeiffer University softball team split a road doubleheader at William Peace University, winning the first game 9-7 in eight innings and falling in game two 8-7 in nine innings.
Pfeiffer – 30-6, 11-5 USA South
William Peace – 14-16, 9-5 USA South
Game one saw the Falcons waste no time getting on the board as Makenzie Pennell rapped an RBI single, scoring Vada Blue Sherrill, who reached after being hit by a Pacer pitch in her first at-bat.
Pfeiffer plated two more runs in the fourth when Maranda Benton delivered a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 Pfeiffer.
WPU got a run to cross in their half of the fourth, but Pfeiffer struck for three runs in the fifth, making it 6-1 thanks to a Kari Westerbeek three-run home run that cleared the left field fence.
WPU was able to tie the game in the sixth at 6-6, as they methodically scored five runs on five hits.
Neither team was able to manage anything in the seventh inning, but Pfeiffer struck for three in the eighth on a pair of bunts, the first from Maranda Benton and the second from Taylor Jerome. Pennell would rope a single to left field for the final Pfeiffer run, pushing the lead to 9-6.
William Peace did strike for a run in the home half of the eighth, but a ground out and two strike outs ended the game, with the Falcons taking the 9-7 win.
In game two, WPU raced to a 6-3 lead after three innings, but Pfeiffer closed to 6-5 in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout from Alyssa Heitz and an RBI single from Vada Blue Sherrill. Another RBI single, this time off the bat of Hanna Tyner in the sixth inning tied it at 6-6.
After neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings Pfeiffer went ahead in the ninth when Sara Brown scored on a passed ball to make it 7-6.
WPU would then score two runs on a Falcon throwing error in the ninth to take the 8-7 win.
Pfeiffer will travel to Greensboro, N.C. on Thursday, April 11 for a nonconference doubleheader against Guilford. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Haworth Field.
