Salem Outlasts Pfeiffer Volleyball in 3-2 Thriller

Misenheimer, N.C. (Oct. 25, 2018) – Visiting Salem College outlasted the Pfeiffer University volleyball team 3-2 (19-25, 29-27, 22-25, 25-19, 8-15) in a USA South match at Merner Gym on Wednesday night.

The Spirits took the first set 25-19 before Pfeiffer stormed back to take the second set 29-27.  Salem won the third set 25-22 and the Falcons claimed the fourth set 25-19 to force the deciding fifth set, in which Salem won 15-8.

Freshman hitter Alonna Clouse (Harrisburg, N.C.) had a double-double with a team-best 14 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore teammate Lea Hilton (Kannapolis, N.C.) registered 12 kills as the only other Falcon in double figures. Setter Angelina Fardella (Harrisburg, N.C.) had 37 assists and six digs. In addition, Fardella had six aces on the outing.

Also contributing defensively was sophomore Emma Gray Beacham (Laurinburg, N.C.), as she had a team-high 21 digs.

The loss drops the Falcons to 8-17 on the season and 4-10 in USA South play while Salem improves to 12-11 overall and 10-5 in league play.

Pfeiffer will return to play this upcoming Sunday, Oct. 28 in their final two matches of the season, taking on Mary Baldwin and North Carolina Wesleyan in USA South play in Rocky Mount, N.C.
