Misenheimer, NC---Pfeiffer women's basketball team lost to Barton by one, 79-78, in conference action Thursday night. A last second shot bounced out for the Falcons, who led most of the second half. The Falcons are now 7-14 on the season overall and 4-10 in the conference. Barton is now 12-7 and 10-4.  After a close first three minutes Barton went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-6 lead. The Falcons responded with a 12-0 run to grab an 18-15 lead with 12:45 to go. Barton regained the lead at 25-20 but again the Falcons came right back and tied the game at 29 with 5:13 to go and continued on until they led 32-29. At halftime the game was tied at 42. The Falcons started the second half with a 9-2 run over the first three minutes. Barton cut the lead to 55-54 when Devona Knight hit a "3" to build the lead back up to four, 58-54. With 9:56 left Ashelle Athill made a driving lay-up and a free throw to give Pfeiffer a double-digit lead at 67-57. Barton fought back and took a 77-76 advantage with 1:51 left. With 34 seconds left Domonique China hit two free throws to give Pfeiffer a 78-77 lead. The Falcons stopped Barton but then turned the ball over and the Bulldogs made a field goal to take a one point lead. The Falcons had a last shot but it bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Coach Dobbs said, "A great effort from our kids, we had the game in control and everything where we wanted, and just couldn't handle an inbounds pass. For us to be successful, we need to learn to close out teams like this, that we clearly can beat. But we just need to finish against one of these top teams. The sad fact is, if we played this hard against anyone except Barton, Mt. Olive and Anderson....we win every game by 20 and win most of these games. But that's our challenge at this point, to learn not to play at the level of our competition every night." Pfeiffer travels to Erskine for a 2:00 pm game on Saturday. |
