SALISBURY, N.C. - Two runs in the top of the 10th broke a six-all tie as Belmont Abbey College claimed an 8-6 extra-inning victory over Pfeiffer University in a non-conference neutral site tilt hosted by Catawba. The Crusaders move to 3-0 on the year while the Falcons fall to 0-2.
A one-out double and ensuing RBI-single to center plated the first run for Belmont Abbey in the 10th while a two-out double to left-center provided the other.
After a sacrifice-fly plated the Crusaders' first run of the day in the first, the Falcons responded with three in their half of the first with a Johnny Brown, Jr. bases loaded walk and a two-run double to left by Dalton Lindley.
Each team traded three runs in the second as an RBI-groundout and two-run single plated Belmont Abbey's three runs while one swing of Brown, Jr's bat cleared the bases on a double to center.
The Crusaders forced extra innings by scoring the tying two in the sixth on a wild pitch and Falcon throwing error that would have retired the side.
Kevin Price led the Falcons with a 3-for-6 performance with a double while scoring a pair of runs. Brown, Jr. finished his day 1-for-4 with four runs driven in while Lindley concluded with a pair of hits and RBI. Pfeiffer out-hit Belmont Abbey 10-5, but surrendered nine walks. Both teams combined to strand 23 runners with Pfeiffer leaving a dozen on.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday at Catawba with a pair of games starting at 3:00 p.m. Mars Hill will be up first for Pfeiffer followed by a showdown with #18 Catawba at 6:00 p.m.
