MISENHEIMER, N.C. - A three run bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Pfeiffer baseball team (15-11, 7-4) to a 7-4 victory over Limestone (5-19, 1-11) in the rubber game of a three game series on Monday.
Cody McKenzie went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and Izzy Perez hit his sixth home run - and second in the three game series - and drove in two runs. Zach Huneycutt earned the win in relief and Hunter Jobe notched his second save of the season.
Limestone struck first, scoring in the top of the first off starter Tyler Lequire. Perez answered with a two run blast in the bottom of the inning to put Pfeiffer up 2-1.
Limestone regained the lead in the top of the third with two runs on three hits. Trailing 3-2, Pfeiffer added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead. John Elwood earned an RBI with a ground out and Jordan Eckard launched a double off the centerfield wall to put Pfeiffer up one.
The Saints would fight back to tie the game with some small ball in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt, Chris Scura singled through the left side. Limestone's Alex Oleszkowicz rounded third and Perez came up with a strong throw to the plate. Oleszkowicz put on the brakes and Pfeiffer catcher Dalton Lindley threw out Scura who tried to advance on Perez's throw. However, as soon as Lindley threw to second, Oleszkowicz took off and slid in just in front of the throw, tying the game at four.
The seventh inning started with a single up the middle by Jordan Eckard, who then stole second. Connor Baldy struck out on a pitch in the dirt but reached base as the catcher's throw to first went errant. McKenzie lined a RBI single and Cole McGraw placed a pop up just inside the left field line, scoring two.
Kyle Hackney pitched a perfect eighth and Jobe allowed the tying run to come to the plate but froze the Saints pinch hitter with a third strike to end the game.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Mars Hill starting at 3 p.m.
