DUE WEST, S.C. - Ethan Greene and Izzy Perez led the Pfeiffer baseball team (20-13, 11-4 CC) to a 7-5 upset victory at No. 2 Erskine (26-4, 14-2) at Grier Field on Friday afternoon. Greene tossed a complete game and Perez drove in three runs as the Falcons recorded their first win over a top-five opponent since defeating No. 4 Mount Olive 4-1 on April 14, 2012.
Greene improved to 6-2 on the hill as the junior held a potent Erskine lineup to just three earned runs. Greene didn't walk a batter and struck out seven on the afternoon as he posted his fourth complete game of the year.
Perez once again led the offensive surge as the senior strung together his fifth consecutive multi-RBI game. The outfielder went 3-for-5 with three RBI's and broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the eighth with a two-RBI double to right center. Perez now has 18 RBI over his last 10 games and has scored at least one run in eight straight games. He also ranks second in the conference with nine home runs and fifth in the league with 34 RBI's.
Erskine entered play as league leaders in team ERA and team batting average but the Falcons were up to the task. The Flying Fleet have allowed just 236 hits on the season, 30 less than anyone else in the league, but the Falcons pounded out 18 hits in the contest. Erskine's starter Austin Gambrell entered the game with a 5-0 record and a 2.03 ERA but the Falcons put up eight hits, and four runs on the Erskine ace and chased him after just three innings of work.
Each member of the starting nine recorded a hit in the game, led by three each from Perez and Anthony Allende.
Erskine was led by Richard Dix who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the contest, including his sixth homer of the year.
Tanner Mathis put the Falcons ahead in the top of the first as his single to left field brought home Perez for the first run of the game. Erskine would answer with two in the bottom of the second to grab the lead but that didn't last long.
Cody McKenzie led off the third with a double down the left field line and Allende drew a walk. Perez crushed a double to score McKenzie and Mathis would bring home Allende with another RBI single. Perez came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Dalton Lindley to put Pfeiffer up 4-2.
The Flying Fleet evened the game in the bottom of the fifth on Dix's big fly. Each team put up a single run in the seventh before Perez broke the tie for good with his second double of the contest.
Pfeiffer looks to keep the momentum as the two teams complete the three game set with a double header tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon. ÂÂ
