DUE WEST, S.C. - The Pfeiffer baseball team (21-14, 12-5 CC) split this afternoon's double header at No. 2 Erskine (27-5, 15-3) and took two out of three in the weekend series with the Flying Fleet. Pfeiffer won the opener 6-5 before dropping game two 13-5.
In game one, Pfeiffer erased a 5-1 deficit with a four run fifth inning and then pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh thanks to a fielding error by Erskine. Drew Wilson started for the Falcons and last 3.2 innings and allowed all five runs. Wilson left the game with Pfeiffer trailing 5-1 but the bullpen pitched 3.1 scoreless innings. The Pfeiffer fifth inning started with a pop up and a ground out before six consecutive batters reached base. Cole McGraw had a bases loaded single that scored Anthony Allende and Izzy Perez and then Dalton Lindley followed that with a 2-RBI double to left center to even the game at five.
Craig Jacobelli tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and gave way to Zach Huneycutt who improved to 2-1 with 2 nearly perfect innings. Lindley led off the seventh with a base hit and advanced to second on Jordan Eckard's successful sacrifice bunt. Lindley moved to third on Connor Baldy's fly out to center and would come around to score as John Elwood's grounder was booted by the shortstop. Huneycutt slammed the door shut in the seventh as the Falcons took the first two games of the series.
However, the Erskine bats woke up in the final game of the series as the conference leaders had 13 runs on 15 hits. Erskine had a five run third inning and a seven run fifth to cruise to the victory. Tyler Lequire was saddled with the loss and fell to 4-3 on the season. Offensively, Allende hit his third home run of the season and went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI's. McGraw and Lindley each went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Catawba for a 6 p.m. game as the Falcons continue their 13 game road stretch.
