Another Late Rally Advances Pfeiffer in CC Tournament

BURLINGTON, N.C. – For the second straight day, the Pfeiffer baseball team (28-20) had a dramatic comeback in their final at bat as the Falcons scored four times in the top of the ninth to erase a 6-4 deficit and come away with an 8-7 victory over Erskine (33-16). The win improves Pfeiffer to 3-1 against the Flying Fleet on the season and, more importantly, gives the Falcons a perfect 2-0 record in the double elimination tournament.

Tyler Lequire was dominant on the mound as the senior struck out a career-high 12 batters in his 6.2 innings, setting the stage for a dramatic last two innings.

The Falcons entered the top of the eight facing a 4-2 deficit. Jordan Eckard led off the inning with a double and Cody McKenzie followed with a single. Zac Chilton drove in one on a fielding error and Xavier Rodriguez evened the game with an RBI base hit.

However, the mighty Flying Fleet put up two solo home runs in the bottom of the eight to reclaim a two run advantage.

The ninth inning started with a fielding error, which allowed Anthony Allende to reach base safely. Izzy Perez followed with a single and Eckard drew a four pitch walk to load the bases. McKenzie crushed a double to left center to score two before Rodriguez recorded the game-winner. The freshman placed a fly ball perfectly inside the left field line which scored Eckard and McKenzie with the winning runs.

The Flying Fleet made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to right field that cut the lead to 8-7. However, Zach Huneycutt was able to retire the final two batters to earn his earn his second consecutive win.

John Elwood went 4-for-6 in the leadoff spot and McKenzie added four hits, two runs and three RBI's.

Pfeiffer advances to play the only other unbeaten team in the conference tournament with an 11 a.m. show down with North Greenville at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
