Clutch Pitching From Greene and Huneycutt Send Falcons to CC Championship Game

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Pfeiffer baseball team (29-21) punched a ticket to the Conference Carolinas championship tomorrow with a thrilling 5-4 win over Belmont Abbey (25-22) in tonight's elimination game. The win gives Pfeiffer 29 for the season, which is their highest total since the 2004 season.

Pfeiffer struck first in the top of the first inning when Anthony Allende hit a RBI double to right field scoring John Elwoodfrom second base. The Falcons extended their lead to 5-0 with a four run fifth inning, Allende drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single and Jordan Eckard followed it up with a 2 RBI single up the middle. Belmont Abbey scored one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh. However, Pfeiffer was able to strand the game tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Zach Huneycutt picked up his first save of the year pitching 2.1 innings and stranded the tying run on second base in the ninth inning. So far, Huneycutt has had a hand in each of Pfeiffer's three victories in the Conference Tournament. The reliever picked up wins in the first two games and closed the door in tonight's game.

Ethan Greene picked up his eighth of the season and went 6.1 innings striking out six and only giving up two earned runs. Greene was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning, with a great defense play to end the inning.

Elwood was on base four times today including two hits, two walks and scoring two runs for the Falcons. Allende had two hits and recorded two RBI's in the Falcon victory. Connor Baldy drove in one run and recorded one hit. Xavier Rodriguezhad a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error in the first inning and later scored Pfeiffer's first run.

The Falcons advance to the Conference Carolinas championship game against North Greenville tomorrow at noon. In order to win the title and advance to the NCAA Tournament, the Falcons would need to be the Crusaders twice as NGU is 3-0 in tournament play.
