MISENHEIMER, NC- In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, the Pfeiffer baseball team (1-2) fell to Mars Hill (2-1) 4-0. The Falcons were unable to push across any runs, only recording six hits and leaving seven base runners on base. John Elwood recorded three hits, and Derek Perry went 2-for-4 recording Pfeiffer's only extra base hit of the contest.
The Lions started the scoring in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs without recording a single hit. Pfeiffer hit two of the first three batters to start the inning. The Falcons had a chance to turn a double play, when Elwood fielded a sharp ground ball, stepped on third and fired to first. However, the throw was in the dirt and first baseman Zach Scudder couldn't make the scoop, as the ball skipped back to the fence scoring two Lions. Mars Hill pushed across two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Lions pitching duo of Tom Mastrodonato and Hunter Boydston kept Falcon hitters on their heels all day, as the two pitches combined for five strike outs, giving up zero runs and only walking three. Boydston picked up his first win of the season going five innings, giving up only two hits with three strikeouts.
In his second career start Anthony Allende pitched well, going six innings, striking out three batters and only giving up two earned runs. Colson Everett made his first appearance in a Pfeiffer uniform, pitching the final three inning, not surrendering a run and only allowing two hits.
Pfeiffer hits the road on Saturday, February 6 for a three game series against West Georgia. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
