MISENHEIMER, N.C – The Pfeiffer Falcons dropped a pair of games on Saturday to the Flying Fleet of Erskine. In game one, Pfeiffer and Erskine played 14 innings and totaled 22 hits. Pfeiffer starter, Anthony Allende had a strong performance as he pitched nine innings, allowing one run as he got the no decision.
In the first inning, Allende allowed a two out, solo homer to designated hitter Chris Rave.
In the bottom of the third, John Elwood started off the inning as he reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Two batters later, Derek Perry reached on the error by shortstop allowing Elwood to move to second base. With two batters on, Cody McKenzie, tied the game as he singled up the middle, scoring Elwood from third base to tie the score at one.
In the bottom of the fourth, Pfeiffer had another chance to bring in runners as Allende started it with a single to right field, Allende moved over to second base on a balk from Erskine starter Zach Bowers and Xavier Rodriguez walked. Then John Elwood singled up the middle advancing Allende and Rodriguez up one base each but, next Brandall Peters hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
In the top bottom of the ninth, Rodriquez started the one out rally as he singled through the left side. Elwood reached first on another fielder's choice as Erskine forced out Rodriquez out at second. The Falcons tried to force the issue as Elwood was given the green light but was caught stealing to end the ninth inning rally.
In the top of the 14th inning Erskine's Gunner Sellers doubled to left center with one out and two batters later Tyler Phillips homered to left to give the Flying Fleet 3-1 lead.
Pfeiffer tried to rally in the bottom half of the 14th as first baseman Tanner Mathis doubled left center. Two batters later, Rodriquez gets aboard with the walk. Damon Smith entered as a pinch for Mathis, Elwood stroked a single to right field as Smith scored but Rodriquez was thrown out trying to take third base.
Peters struck out to end the 14 inning affair as the Falcons dropped game one, 3-2
Elwood led the Falcons with three hits in six at bats to go along with RBI single in the 14th.
In game two, Erskine took the lead in the fourth as Henry Faunce singled up the middle, Davey doubled to right center. Next batter, Nichols grounded out to the second baseman Derek Perry, but Faunce scored from third.
In the top of the fifth, Phillips singled to shortstop Cody McKenzie, but McKenzie's errant throw allowed Phillips move up to second base. Next batter, Trevor Wood singled and reached second on the throw to home as Phillips was thrown out for trying to score.
Two batters later, Chris Rave singled to right, scoring Wood and Sam Cothran moved up to third. With two outs and runners on first and third. Rave attempted to the steal second but caught in the run down and tagged out but it allowed Cothran to steal home before the out was made.
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Rodriquez walked, Perry singled, catcher Chaston Gordon singled as next batter Jordan Eckard grounded out to third base, but allowing Rodriquez to get a run back and making it 3-1.
Pfeiffer rallied in the seventh as Perry reached on the fielding error by the shortstop, Gordon singled, Eckard singled, but Erskine Joe Johnson picked up the save as he got Allende to strike out and Kirby Lambert to ground out to second base to end the game.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday as they host Catawba with first pitch at 6:00 p.m.
