Falcons Can't Silence Catawba's Bats on Opening Day

Box Score

Jeremy Zalacca - Director of Athletic Communications

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer baseball team (0-1) couldn't silence the bats of Catawba (1-0) on opening day, falling to the Indians 13-3 at Joe Ferebee Field on a beautiful afternoon for baseball. Catawba sealed the contest with a five-run eighth inning, capped by a three-run blast to left field by catcher Zach Almond.

The Falcons were led by leadoff hitter John Elwood who went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Zach Scudder went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and reached base safely three times. Pfeiffer was held to just six hits on the afternoon, while the visitors pounded out 12.

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, Pfeiffer cut the lead in half when Elwood scored on a Catawba mistake. With the senior on third and one away, Catawba pitcher Bryan Ketchie dropped the return throw from the catcher and Elwood raced home to cut the lead to 2-1.

Catawba would respond with a 3-spot in the top of the second to take a 5-1 advantage. Damon Smith's RBI groundout scored Scudder in the bottom of the fourth to cut deficit to three but Catawba answered with two more in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Elwood led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Scudder's base hit to right. However, that was Pfeiffer's last run of the game as Catawba scored the last six to run away with the victory.

Jordan Toney suffered the loss, the second of his career, as he tossed five innings and was charged with six runs allowed. Pfeiffer used six pitchers out of the bullpen, highlighted by Cameron Reid's first career appearance as the righty struck out two in his one inning of work.

The Falcons will have six days off before hosting UNC Pembroke on Tuesday at Ferebee Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
