Barton Defeats Pfeiffer On Sunday, 2-1

WILSON, N.C. – After taking two games against Barton yesterday, Pfeiffer (16-18, 7-11 CC) was looking to complete the sweep but instead dropped game three of the series on Sunday afternoon to the Bulldogs (22-15, 7-11) by a score of 2-1. Falcons starter Nick Richmond went five strong innings, giving up no runs and scattering four hits.

In the top of the third, Ira Dorin reached on a two out walk. With John Elwood at the plate, Dorin stole second to allow to get into scoring position but was stranded.

Pfeiffer broke through in the fifth inning. Kirby Lambert singled up the middle to lead of the inning. After reaching third base on a throwing error by Walker, Lambert scored on a sacrifice fly from Christian Marciano.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dylan Goodman relieved Nick Richmond. The first batter Goodman faced singled down the first base line. After a sacrifice moved him over to second base, Goodman walked Barton slugger Andrew Webster. A stolen base advanced the runner to third who came home to score on a sac fly, tying the game at 1.

In the top of the eighth, the Falcons had Dorin on second base with one out, but Dorin was caught stealing at third base to end the threat.

Pfeiffer went to its fourth pitcher of the day, Cody McKenzie in the bottom of the eighth and Garrett again singled to start of the inning. Dearing followed with a bunt single and pushed over Garrett to third. Next batter, Webster was enduced into a ground ball double play but it allowed Garrett to score on the play.

Walker retired Pfeiffer in order in the ninth to pick up the 2-1 win.

Walker picked up his seventh victory of the season as he pitched a complete game allowing just four hits and one run.

The Falcons stranded four runners on base and two in scoring position.

McKenzie picked up the loss in his only inning of work as he allowed three hits and a run.

Both teams are currently tied for sixth place in the league standings, but Pfeiffer holds the tiebreaker. With Pfeiffer taking 2-of-3 games this weekend, it currently owns the sixth and final spot in the Conference Carolinas Tournament.

Pfeiffer returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts nonconference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne at 6 p.m. On March 28, the Falcons defeated the Bears, 14-4 in Hickory, NC.
