Falcons Winning Streak Ends at 10 with 8-7 Loss to Greensboro

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer baseball team (10-4) saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end with an 8-7 defeat at the hands of Greensboro (5-5) on Sunday afternoon. The winning streak matched the longest since the 2004 squad won 10 straight from March 15-April 17.

Early in the contest, it looked like it was going to be a slugfest. Greensboro pushed across three in the top of the first thanks to a pair of Pfeiffer errors.

However, the Falcons came back quickly. After Derek Perry led off the game with a single, Xavier Rodriguez crushed his second career home run to right field to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Blake Carroll drove in a run for the Pride with a double to left center off Pfeiffer starter Will Altemueller to give GC a 4-2 lead in the top of the second. The Pride would add three more off Altemueller in the third thanks to a 2-run HR from Scotty McGuire and an RBI single by Tim Osborne.

Trailing 7-2, the Falcons mounted a comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Rodriguez and Kirby Lambert drew walks and moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Christian Marciano laced a single through the left side to score both.

Greensboro tacked on one more in the top of the fourth but Pfeiffer didn't give in. Chaston Gordon had an RBI single and Perry brought him home with a groundout. Rodriguez's third RBI of the game brought home Mason Striplin to cut the lead to 8-7.

However, the bullpens took over and no one scored over the final five innings. Joseph Hoelle was terrific for Greensboro, coming out of the bullpen to throw five scoreless innings with only one hit allowed.

Derek Dyson, Cameron Reid and Peyton Williams combined to go six innings and not allow an earned run. Williams struck out three in his two innings of work.

Gordon led the Falcons with a 3-for-4 afternoon and Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Altemueller suffered his first loss of the year, falling to 3-1.

Prior to today, the Falcons hadn't lost since Friday, Feb. 16.

The season series is done with Greensboro as Pfeiffer took three of the four games played.

Pfeiffer returns to action on Friday when they travel to Averett for a 2:30 p.m. matchup with the Cougars.
