Pfeiffer Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener at Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, Va. (Nov. 9, 2019) – Visiting Pfeiffer University shot just 7.1% from long range and 34.5% from the field in a 109-61 season-opening loss to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.

The Marlins (1-0) wasted little time, as they built an early 7-0 lead before Pfeiffer's Jamaal David (Waldorf, Md.) hit the Falcons only three-pointer of the afternoon, making it 7-3.

VWU would then push the lead to 23-9 following a Daniel Spencer three-points with 11:15 on the clock.  Diez Mungro (Latta, S.C.) would hit a pair of free throws to pull the Falcons to 23-11, but VWU went on an 11-3 run to boost their lead to 34-14.

The Marlins extended their lead to 61-22 at halftime and would never look back, outscoring Pfeiffer 48-39 in the second half, eventually winning 109-61.

Pfeiffer's David and Mungro scored 10 points each while Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) had a team-best six rebounds to go along with six points.  Teammates Sean Scott (Waldorf, Md.) and Jerome Savoy (Waldorf, Md.) also had six points each for the Falcons in the loss.

As a team, Pfeiffer struggled from outside, going just 1-of-14 (7.1%) while VWU was 11-of-34 (32.4%).  The Marlins also posted a 41-77 (53.2%) mark from the field and a 16-of-22 (72.7%) effort from the free throw line.

Collectively, Pfeiffer shot just 34.5% (20-of-58) from the field and 69% (20-of-29) from the line.

The Falcons (0-1) will look to rebound from the season-opening defeat when they head to Lynchburg to take part in the Wayne Proffit Classic on Saturday, Nov. 16. Tipoff against Lynchburg College is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
