Pfeiffer Baseball Takes Two From Averett

Misenheimer, N.C.   The Pfeiffer University baseball team swept visiting Averett in a USA South doubleheader at a very wet Joe Ferebee Field on Saturday night.

How it Happened – Game 1
After falling down 1-0 in the fourth, Pfeiffer exploded for six runs in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI triple from Bryan Kowalski, scoring Kyler Fairchild from first base.  He walked one batter earlier.  Following an RBI single from Mason Striplin that brought home Kowalski, Pfeiffer was able to load the bases and Kirby Lambert launched a grand slam to right center field to cap the scoring, putting Pfeiffer up 6-1.

The Falcons added two more in the sixth inning to go up 8-1 on RBI singles from Zach Ferrell and Lambert.

Averett plated a run in the seventh to make it 8-2, but the Falcons got four more to cross in the eighth to provide the eventual 12-2 final.  In the eighth, Mason Striplin hit an RBI single to right field followed.  After an error allowed a run to score, Gauge Gantt hit an RBI single then Ira Dorin supplied a sacrifice fly to end the scoring.

Nick Richmond earned the win for the Falcons by throwing 7.0 innings allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out seven.

How it Happened – Game 2

In game two the Falcons put up six runs in the first inning and cruised to the 16-1 win. Chaston Gordon delivered an RBI single to third base. After Blake Winebarger with hit by a pitch driving home another run, Ira Dorin hit a bases-clearing double to put the Falcons up 5-0.  The final run came around on a Kyler Fairchild RBI single, making it 6-0.  Two more runs scored in the third inning on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch.

Pfeiffer scored seven more runs in the fourth inning with the big hit coming on a three-run home run from Kirby Lambert that cleared the center field fence, putting Pfeiffer up 11-0.

Nathan Ray got the pitching win in game two by throwing 5.0 innings, scattering three hits while giving up just one run while striking out five Cougar batters.

Up Next

Pfeiffer and Averett will close out their USA South series on Monday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Joe Ferebee Field.  The game was rescheduled due to the threat of severe storms on Sunday, April 14.  Prior to the game, Pfeiffer will honor the seniors that are participating in their final home game as a Falcon.
