Pfeiffer Women's Basketball Takes Third Straight in 72-64 Win Over Meredith on Senior Night

Misenheimer, N.C.  (Feb. 13, 2020) –  The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team won their third straight game, downing visiting Meredith College 72-64 in the final home game of the 2019-20 season in Merner Gym on Wednesday night.

The Falcons had four players touch double figures led by junior A'Mya McClain (Hickory, N.C.), as she netted 20 points.  Fellow junior teammate Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) had 17 points while shooting 6-of-12 from the field.  Senior Kortni Pinion (Stanfield, N.C.), playing in her final home game of her career, contributed 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds in the win.  Makalla Burnette (Burlington, N.C.) also had a productive outing in scoring 11 points.  Burnette also registered four steals against the Angels.

As a team, Pfeiffer shot 48.4% (30-of-62) from the field and hit five three pointers.  Pfeiffer also forced Meredith into 23 turnovers and converted them into 23 points.

Pfeiffer held a 19-13 lead after the first quarter, but Meredith played well in the second quarter and led by a 28-23 score following a layup from Kate Perko at 4:04 left before halftime.  Pfeiffer went on a 9-2 run to close the quarter, taking the 32-30 lead into the break.

Pfeiffer would lead by as many as nine points (48-39) in the third, but Meredith again chipped away at the lead, drawing to as close as 52-47 with 1:38 left, but the Falcons extended their lead to 57-48 by the end of the third quarter.

Meredith had a strong start to the fourth quarter, drawing to 60-59 on another basket from Perko at 5:51.  Bentley would convert a layup and free throw at 4:06 to once again put the Falcons up six points (67-61).

With the Falcons leading 67-63, both teams suffered through a scoring drought of over two minutes.  Meredith's Zaina Hook made a free throw to draw the Angels to within 67-64, but that would be the closest they would get, as McClain's three-pointer with 52 seconds to go proved to be the shot that ultimately sealed the win for Pfeiffer.

The win improves Pfeiffer to 11-13 overall and 8-8 in USA South play while Meredith dips to 8-16 and 4-11 in league play.

Prior to the game, Pfeiffer honored senior guard Kortni Pinion and senior team manager Kristina Everhart.

The Falcons will hit the road for their final game of the season on Saturday when they travel to Brevard to take on the Tornados.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Boshamer Gymnasium.  The game will also mark Brevard's Block Out Cancer game honoring Greensboro College head coach Randy Tuggle.
