Scott Leads Pfeiffer Men's Basketball to 83-76 Win in Home Opener
Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 13, 2021) – Pfeiffer University senior
Sean Scott had a team-high 21 points to lead the Falcons to an 83-76 win over Covenant College in the home men's basketball opener at Merner Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Scott, from Waldorf, Md., went 10-of-14 from the field and grabbed six rebounds for Pfeiffer. Teammate
Jerome Savoy (Waldorf, Md.) also had a great outing in his first game of his senior season, as he hit three from long range and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line. He also was 4-of-11 overall, corralled nine rebounds and had three assists to go along with his 15 points.
Donnie Haith (Aberdeen, N.C.) scored 13 points off the bench, hitting two from long range while finishing 5-of-9 from the field.
Trailing 73-59 at the 11:20 mark of the second half, the visiting Scots went on a 13-0 run to close the gap to 73-72 at the 2:51 mark.
Scott then scored a driving layup and was fouled by Covenant's Will Crumley. Scott's free throw boosted the Falcon lead back to 76-72, breaking a scoreless drought of over nine minutes.
Pfeiffer's lead would be boosted to 80-74 following a
Taylan Rowe (Oakboro, N.C.) jumper, but Covenant got a basket from Chris Barnette to close to 80-76 with 30 seconds remaining.
Forced to foul, Covenant sent Pfeiffer senior guard
Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) to the line, where he hit a free throw to make it 81-76.
The Scots would then turn the ball over with 12 seconds remaining, and Rowe connect on a pair of free throws with eight seconds to go to provide the eventual 83-76 final.
The win improves Pfeiffer to 13-9 in season opening games since 2000 while head coach
Pete Schoch improves to 3-1 in opening wins as head coach.
Pfeiffer will return to play on Sunday, Nov. 14 when they host Berry College in a 1:00 p.m. game at Merner Gym.
