Falcon Women Fall at Averett in USA South Opener

Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 24, 2021) – The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team opened their USA South schedule with a 74-68 road loss to Averett University on Tuesday night in Danville, Va.

Pfeiffer (3-2, 0-1 USA South) had a rough start as Averett (1-6, 1-0 USA South) outscored the Falcons 20-9 in the opening quarter.  Pfeiffer was just 1-of-16 from the field to start the game, allowing the Cougars to build the double-digit lead, their largest of the game.

Pfeiffer would get a basket from Angel Roland (Monroe, N.C.) to trim the Cougar lead to 24-22 at the 4:54 mark of the second quarter, forcing Averett to call a timeout.  Following the timeout, Averett was able to build the lead back to 32-22 at 2:19 left before halftime.

Pfeiffer again fought back, cutting the lead to 50-49 following a pair of Mya Johnson (Roxboro, N.C.) free throws at 1:30 of the third quarter, but Averett surged ahead again, this time leading 58-51 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, the Falcons would get an Alexus Boyd (Charlotte, N.C.) three-pointer with 1:31 left to cut the Cougar lead to 70-68.

Pfeiffer had a chance to take the lead on two occasions, but a pair of three-point attempts from Boyd and one from Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) were off the mark, forcing the Falcons to foul.

Averett was able to hit four free throws down the stretch to provide the 74-68 final.

Boyd was the only Falcon player with double figures, as she claimed a career-high 12 points on the night while hitting three from long range.

Averett was led by Camryn Lunsford and Genesis Weiters, as they had 17 and 14 points, respectively.

The Falcons will return to play on Tuesday, Nov. 30 when they host their first home USA South game of the season against rival Greensboro.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Merner Gym.
