Box Score Pfeiffer Men's Basketball Takes Season Opener 99-78 Over Greensboro
Misenheimer, N.C. (Feb. 5, 2021) – The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team placed six players in double-figures and shot an impressive 41.2% from beyond the arc and forced 18 turnovers en route to a convincing 99-78 season-opening USA South win over visiting Greensboro College on Friday afternoon at Merner Gym.
Pfeiffer (1-0, 1-0 USA South) was led by senior Jamaal David (Clinton, Md.), as he finished with 19 points on a 6-of-10 shooting effort that included a 5-of-8 mark from the outside. David also brought down a team-best eight rebounds and had three assists and a block in the win. Teammate Sean Scott (Waldorf, Md.) also had a great 2021 debut, as he poured in 18 points and had five rebounds. Scott was particularly efficient from the free throw line, going 7-of-9 from the stripe.
Dorian Miles (Greenville, S.C.) and Donnie Haith (Aberdeen, N.C.) each scored 13 points in the win in the first game playing in the Falcon program.
Rounding out the double-figure scorers for Pfeiffer were Jerome Savoy (Waldorf, Md.) and Diez Mungro (Latta, S.C.), with Savoy managing Savoy managing 12 points and Mungro adding 11.
Greensboro's Bradley Pierce led all scorers with 24 points while Matthew Brown scored 21. The only other double-digit scorer for The Pride was Amillia Huggins, as he scored 15 points in the loss.
Pfeiffer opened the game on a 3-0 spurt with Scott hitting a trio of free throws. From that point, Greensboro never held the lead, as Pfeiffer built the first half cushion to 31-19 on a Savoy basket at 7:47. The Pride did close to 33-26 on a pair of Pierce free throws, but Pfeiffer again distanced themselves to 38-28 on another pair of Scott free throws at the 5:40 mark.
Greensboro made a late first half push, closing to 45-41 with six seconds before the halftime buzzer, but a Scott tip-in as time expired provided the 47-41 score at the break.
In the second half, Pfeiffer again kept The Pride at distance, eventually building a 20-point lead (81-61) and were never threatened again, taking the 99-78 win.
Pfeiffer improved their record to 2-1 in season-openers under head coach Pete Schoch and has posted a 6-1 record in season-openers over the past seven seasons.
The Falcons will have a short turnaround, as they will hit the road to take on Greensboro on Sunday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
