Box Score Averett Uses Big First Quarter to Down Pfeiffer Women's Basketball, 69-54
Misenheimer, N.C. (Feb. 7, 2021) – Visiting Averett University jumped out to a 25-12 lead after the opening quarter and held the Pfeiffer women's basketball team to just 26.9% shooting for the game, handing the Falcons a 69-54 setback in USA South play in Merner Gym on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars (3-4, 3-4 USAS) led 42-24 at halftime and never let Pfeiffer back to within 13 points the remainder of the way. Averett shot 28-of-62 from the field (45.2%) and hit six three-pointers in the win. They also coerced Pfeiffer into 23 turnovers, scoring 21 points off of Falcon miscues.
Averett got 20 points from Shunte Bethea and 13 points from Camryn Lunsford in the win. Lunsford also led the visitors with seven rebounds.
For Pfeiffer, Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) scored a team-high 18 points and had nine rebounds. She went 5-of-12 from the field and was 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Bentley also added an assist, a block and three steals.
Teammate Shalonda Wilkins (Chesterfield, Va.) was the only other Falcon player in double-digits, as she scored 10 points on a 4-of-10 shooting effort.
The loss drops Pfeiffer to 2-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Pfeiffer will look to split the season series on Monday when they travel to Danville to take on Averett at the Grant Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
