Pfeiffer earned a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Blake Winebarger (Yadkinville, N.C.) then hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Corey Lackey to score from third to grab the 2-1 lead.
Averett threatened in the seventh, but Pfeiffer managed to catch the Cougars stealing to end the inning. In the eighth, Averett put runners on first and second following a two-out walk, a wild pitch and another walk. Pfeiffer's Josh Topper entered and recorded the final out of the inning by strikeout.
Topper was also strong in the ninth, as he struck out the side to close the game.
