Pfeiffer Women Win Third Straight, Beats Methodist 72-58

Misenheimer, N.C. (February 5, 2022) – The Pfeiffer Women's Basketball team won their third straight USA South matchup as they defeated Methodist University Saturday afternoon 72-58.

Senior Shalonda Wilkins scored a season high 13 points to lead the way for the Falcons (11-13, 7-9 USA South). Fellow senior Mya Johnson joined Wilkins in double figures, scoring 11 points. Freshman Alexis Bynum also reached double figures with 10 points.

For the Monarchs (10-10, 8-6 USA South), Aniyah Tate led the way with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kiley Hicks led Methodist in scoring with 13 points. Aneesa Irizarry was the only other Monarch in double figures with 10 points.

In the first quarter the two teams would take turns trading the lead. Pfeiffer would hold a 6-5 lead with 3:47 left in the quarter, but Methodist would close on a 10-5 run capped by a 3-point shot by Melissa D'Oleo with 5 seconds left to take an 15-11 lead.

The Monarchs would start the second quarter on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 10 points. Pfeiffer would respond with a 15-2 run that spanned 6 minutes. Wilkins would finish the run with a three pointer to give Pfeiffer a 26-23 lead. Pfeiffer would close the half with the 3-point lead 31-28.

For the second straight game Pfeiffer would use a big run to open the third quarter and pull away from their opponent. The Falcons would start on 14-2 to run to extend the lead to 15 points. Pfeiffer would outscore the Monarchs by 11 points in the quarter.

In the fourth, a three pointer by Mara Ochoa-Contreras with 4:07 left would push the Falcon lead to 18 points, their largest of the game. Pfeiffer would see the game out from there and take the victory.

The Pfeiffer women will have another short turn around as they will return to action Sunday, February 6th for an afternoon matchup with North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount, N.C. The game is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
